Melvyl • Heads down on upgrading to V16.02 • Current timeline is Fall, 2007 • Not a feature rich upgrade • Backend/platform change
Melvyl, ctd • Integration with SFX • Faster loading record rate (hw) • Supports Integrating Resources • Improvements in Holdings display • Indexes • Alphabetical campus locations
Melvyl Upgrade • November/December campus involvement • Identified significant issues • Brought in campus expertise – languages, maps/music expertise • Currently testing move from AIX to Sun • Final run this summer, then go LIVE!
UC-eLinks • Steve Toub joined as Project Manager • Sarah Troy has replaced Tammy Dearie on Liaisons Team • Margery Tibbetts – Chair, ELUNA Steering Committee
UC-eLinks • Increased usage: peak usage in Fall 2006 now at 35,000 requests per day • Increased number of full-text targets as UC acquires more content • Usability study of service menu conducted; new labels/grouping released early summer 2007
UC-eLinks • 8 of 10 campuses now using the A-Z list for primary eJournal discovery tool • Changes in maintenance processes • Monthly updates continue, improving quality and coverage of KnowledgeBase • UC Merced and UCB Boalt began local maintenance • New campus staff at UCLA and UCI trained
UC-eLinks • Other training – UCSD Shared Cataloging, UCLA, UCB/Boalt • Margery and Steve analyzing OpenURL failures to find Full Text – ELUNA • UC-eLinks participating in MESUR project
Metalib • Successfully completed NSDL grant • demonstrated the integration of NSDL content alongside licensed database content. • Usability assessment work was performed on the NSDL prototype • User interface is being rewritten in Ruby on Rails instead of Java • Metalib (v. 4) was installed, configured, and tested.
Metalib, ctd. • CDL and UCLA working on a pilot portal • Tailored for Women’s studies faculty and graduate students • Will provide feedback on the deployment process, time and staff level required, • CDL will use this information to decide about production deployment. • Steve Toub is replacing Roy Tennant as project manager due to Roy accepting a position at OCLC.
Request Achievements • Sherry Willhite is the Project Manager • Moved to VDX version 3.0 (Oct 2006) • My ILL Requests (Zportal) soft roll out (began Jan 07) • Running automated patron privacy scripts to break the link between the patron record and the ILL record for items completed > 60 days previously (Feb 2007) • UCR began borrowing via VDX (April 2007) • Began the ILL archiving process to remove completed, inactive records from VDX (April 2007)
Request Achievements • Melvyl initiated Journal Request (Nov 2006) • Request form now matches users IP to a campus and tailors the options pertinent to that campus • AKA the Facelift (Dec 2006)
Request - Coming Soon • UCB begins borrowing on VDX (target June 2007) • CDL to release web-based ILL statistics reporting system with output in HTML • Replace both the current CDL Report tool and the static PDF reports on the CDL statistics web (target Summer 2007) • Move to VDX version 3.1 (target Fall 2007)
Request - Coming Soon, ctd. • Revision to Request handling of missing items (target June 2007) • Update data elements transmitted in structured e-mail sent from PIR (Request) to VDX (June 2007) • Mary Heath retires……
UC-OCLC Pilot History • University Librarians charged BSTF Team in 2005 • BSTF produced report in December 2005 • 2006 – UC wide discussion • 2007 – ULs charged new teams • Exec Team • IMP Team
The Teams • Executive Team • Brian Schottlaender (UCSD) • Gary Strong (UCLA) • Karen Butter (UCSF) • Laine Farley (CDL) • Terry Ryan (Chair of IMP team)
Implementation Team • Amy Kautzman – UCD • Charlotte Rubens – UCB • Ellen Meltzer – CDL • Joan Starr – CDL • John Riemer – UCLA • Luc deClerck – UCSD • Patti Martin – CDL • Sara Davidson – UCM • Terry Ryan – UCLA (Chair)
Why OCLC? • Moving discovery beyond the local level to the network level • Allow users to discover resources beyond our consortial level • Scope down to the regional, union view, or local • Database size – 100+ M records, growing 10M/year
Why OCLC (continued) • Cooperative memberships status of OCLC • Integration with mass digitization efforts • Leverage investment with peer institutions • Ongoing research agenda • Improved cataloging workflow • Digital asset integration • Journal article integration
Project Goals • Goal is to explore a replacement for Melvyl • Campus OPACS • Outside the scope of this pilot • Staff use or for more specialized purposes
What Will the Pilot Look Like? • Based on Worldcat Local • 10 UC branded URLs • 1 Melvyl branded URL • Pilot available later this year (target) • Continuous development • At least one upgrade during the pilot • Links to local OPACS for circ/location information
How Will the Project be Evaluated • Provides enhanced discovery services • Access to all of the current OCLC records from the 10 campuses • Operability with UC-eLinks and Request • Retrieves and displays records with local locations, holdings, and status information from local ILS systems
Input Along the Way • Deliberate attempt to develop a new way for UC to work • IMP team will reach out and tap UC experts in a variety of areas • ACGS, for example, HOTs, CAMCIG, HOPS and CDC will be charged • Every attempt will be made to include people from every campus
