  1. Why Hypermedia? Jana Craven

  2. Hyper • Exists in space of more than 3 dimensions, you can leap from dimension to dimension. • You can go from site to site or link to link to understand new information.

  3. Media • A means of expression such as text, image, photograph, drawing, audio, or picture. • It is the facts and ideas that can be put onto a website, or into a 3 dimensional world.

  4. Hypermedia Examples • Breakthrough to Literacy Program • www.starfall.com • www.primarygames.com

  5. Is hypermedia the best way to present information to people? • Until further research has been done this is completely up to your opinion.

  6. Here are some research opinions • Hypermedia structure reflects the way people think cognitively • People can naturally understand information when it is obtainable in this format; however, this has never been proven . • Information can be given in a variety of learning styles.

  7. In the schools • Computers and telecommunications are in full swing in schools all over the country. • Hypermedia can be a big impact in schools if teachers understand how and when to use hypermedia, can select the appropriate software, and are trained to use computers.

  8. What teachers need • They need to be trained properly on all the equipment they are given. • They need to have a clear understanding of their own curriculum objectives. • Teachers also need to allow time to teach students how to use computers to the best benefits.

  9. One Experiment in testing hypermedia • The students designed a website in this experiment. • The advantages were empowerment, motivation, and collaboration. • Some of the downfalls were time constraints, equipment limitations, lack of technical skills, and disagreement among students. • From a curriculum point of view the students used print based literacy, oral literacy, problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills and interpreting and composing skills.

  10. Overall Conclusions • Hypermedia can be beneficial to motivating the students to learn. • It can also help hit all the different learning styles of the students. • Students have the opportunity to control their own learning at their own pace. • Hypermedia can be good to use as part of the classroom instuction but not all of the instruction.
