What is a strategic plan? Strategic plans are comprehensive documents that cover all aspects of an organization’s work, including programs and services, management and operations, fundraising and finances, marketing, communications and membership development, just to name a few.
Components of an effective strategic plan should include: • Mission Statement • Vision Statement • Values Statement • Goals and Objectives • Strategies and Tactics • An Implementation Plan
MISSION STATEMENT Brief expression of your purpose. “Why do we exist? “What do we do?”
VISION STATEMENT Brief description of your desired future state. “Where do we want to be?”
VALUES STATEMENT Brief description of your principals. “What do we believe in?”
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Goals and objectives should be measurable. “What do we want to accomplish?”
STRATEGIES AND TACTICS The approach needed to achieve goals and objectives. “How will we actually accomplish our work?”
IMPLEMENTATION PLAN The “user’s guide” to your strategic plan. “What are our specific priorities?”
THE DISCUSSION • Brainstorming • Bullet list or flow chart • What areas require the most focus • Membership • Finance • Pro Bono • Student education • CLE • Technology
THE DISCUSSION • Set Goals and Assign Tasks • Utilize your Region Directors and other local associations during your region meetings for ideas • Network with other associations to troubleshoot issues
CREATE • Place group approved ideas into a working document • Concise • Well organized • Achievable • Take a step by step approach and work closely together to decide what should and should not be included in your plan.
DELEGATE • Delegate responsibilities • Designate a point person or supervisor
EXECUTE • Constant review and revision • Prioritize • Means of execution • Survey • Email discussion • Event or meeting
EXECUTE • Use your website • Create discussion boards • Post announcements • Use your calendar • Be well organized • Keep everyone informed • Provide a reasonable deadline or time frame
FOLLOW THROUGH Make a commitment to see your plan through to the end
FOLLOW UP • Keep lines of communication open • Don’t get distracted - keep on point • Create a tickler system
UPDATE Revisit your plan on a regular basis
