  1. French potential involvement • in the next EMEP IMP • Nathalie POISSON

  2. French contribution to the EMEP network • Contribution for Level 1 and 2: MERA • 10 dedicated stations under the responsibility of • the national environment agency (ADEME) • respecting the EMEP siting criteria and • measurement recommendations • Contribution for Level 3: • research stations • Puy de Dôme

  3. Puy de Dôme station Free trospospheric station (1465 m asl) EUSAAR and EUCAARI site in Central France Standard measurements (EUSAAR quality controlled) : - continuous : Aerosol size distributions (by SMPS) Aerosol Optical properties (scattering and absorption coefficients) - 48h-resolution : Aerosol components (inorganic, mass, OC/EC) in PM2.5 with measurements of EC/OC using the reference method protocol prepared by EUSAAR

  4. Puy de Dôme station Specific measurements proposed for the EMEP IMP Improve time-resolution of aerosol components in PM2.5 (additional filter sampling for chemical composition) Continuous measurements of: Aerosol Mass (TEOM FDMS) Aerosol chemical composition (AMS) 48h-resolution Hi-Vol samplers for improving the separation of organic aerosol into primary vs. secondary and biogenic vs. anthropogenic components (e.g. levoglucosane, 14C)

  5. Puy de Dôme station Attempts to quantify: OC/OM ratio (AMS and chemical analyses) aerosol water (hygroscopic growth measurement and modelling) Improved achievement of mass closure on the filter analysis (micro balance and chemical analyses) Vertical distribution of the aerosol (LIDAR below PDD) Additional measurements proposed to be confirmed Inorganic gas concentrations (HNO3, NH3, HCl, SO2), with particular emphasis on HNO3 and NH3 using scrubbing techniques

  6. MERA-EMEP network Continuous measurements of PM10, PM2.5 and (?) PM1 (TEOM-FDMS) Inorganic species speciation (denuder/filterpack and/or filterpacks): HNO3, NH3, HCl, SO2, NO3p, NH4p, SO4p and probably crustal species (Ca, Na, Mg,...) Aerosol size distributions (SMPS)

  7. MERA Next steps … Select the parameters, the station (PDD + ? MERA/EMEP), methodology, reporting… inputs from TFMM (modelers) Check the availability of equipments (French AMS, …) Get the necessary funds (EUCAARI, ACCENT, ADEME, …) Contacts: PDD: Paolo Laj (LGGE-OPGC/CNRS) MERA: Patrice Coddeville (EMD)
