  1. P07007: Adapted Home Entry Wenbo Chen Project Manager, EE Tanvir Rasel EE Meklet Kidane EE Faculty Mentors: Dr. Elizabeth DeBartolo Dr. Daniel Phillips Sponsor:National Science Foundation

  2. P07007: Project Background • The Adapted home entry system is designed to help people with disabilities to easily gain access to their home without assistance. One house has two residents who can not manually open the front door because of their disabilities. Last year’s team developed a unit that allows them to operate the front door using a remote control. • The hardware for their design is functional, but the control system does not function properly and must be redesigned

  3. P07007: Project Description • Project goal: To design and build a robust control system to run the existing hardware. • Market: Residences with individuals who have mental and physical disabilities. • Customer: Arc of Monroe County Michelle Antonelli (House Manager)

  4. P07007: High Level Customer Needs • Open and close door manually as well as with a remote. • Manual usage is given higher priority • Minimum maintenance/ repair. <= once every 6 months • Prevent personal injury from door movement. speed of door <= 19.2 deg/sec. force needed to stop door <= 15 lbs. use of motion detectors • Presentable overall appearance all components and wiring enclosed in casing except the sensors. • Design within budget <= $1200

  5. P07007: Design Concept Door Overview

  6. Motor Power supply clutch P07007: Design Concept Inside Box Design

  7. P07007: Design Concept Optical switch design and placement

  8. P07007: Design Concept Software Flowchart

  9. P07007: Design Concept

  10. P07007: Design Concept

  11. P07007: Risk Assessment • Over Voltage • Solution: use over voltage regulators use fuses • Short Circuit • Solution: use PCB to limit wires use shrink tubes to insulate wires • Components overheat • Solution: include proper ventilation and/or fan (if needed) to circulate air throughout device

  12. P07007: Budget

  13. P07007: Product Development Process Phase Phase 0: Meet with customer and define needs Phase 1: Concept development and selection Phase 2: System level design Phase 3: Detailed Design Phase 4: Testing, debugging, and documentation MSD 1 MSD 2 0 1 2 3 4 Current phase of development

  14. P07007: Current State of Design • Design meets all customer needs • Control system design/layout complete. • System flowchart complete. • Current budget status: • Available: $1200 • Expected cost: $740 • All components will be ordered next week • Only long lead item is PIC microcontroller development board (2 weeks)

  15. P07007: MSD II Project Schedule Milestones • Mar.19: Design verification completed, PCB design completed. • Mar.26: Software developed and tested. • Apr.20: Software and Hardware combined and tested. • May 04: Build casing for system. • May 11: Write user manual, formal paper & poster. • May 18: Project Review - Phase 4 Completion
