    3. What was the Purpose of the Morrill Act of 1962 “The land-grant idea was born in the midst of the Civil War and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln. Land-grant colleges started out mostly training farmers and their wives. The land-grants have evolved over the years, transforming shopkeepers into CEOs and carpenters into architects. Today, they train future computer gurus and international business persons”(ISU)

    10. When was the act initiated? The Original Act was penned in 1857 Passed by Congress in 1859 Vetoed by President James Buchanan

    11. When was the act initiated? (cont) The Act was amended and resubmitted in 1861 The Act was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on July 2, 1862. A second Morrill Act in 1890 extended the land-grant provisions to sixteen southern states and permitted them to divide federal funds between white and black schools.

    12. How was the Act to be Funded? Under the act, each eligible state received a total of 30,000 acres of federal land for each member of Congress for each state in the Union. This land, or the proceeds from its sale, was to be used toward establishing and funding the educational institutions for the benefit of engineering, agriculture and military science.

(cont) Under provision six of the Act, "No State while in a condition of rebellion or insurrection against the government of the United States shall be entitled to the benefit of this act," After the war, however, the 1862 Act was extended to the former Confederate states The Act was eventually extended to every state and territory, including those created after 1862.
