The Story of Ratner, G Commented that Company’s cheaper jewellery products=cheap Consequences; • Reports in national press (front page headlines) Short term; • Immediate effects on sales was positive despite bad publicity Long term; • People associate gifts from the company =cheap rubbish during economy melt-down • Sales slumped • Company image suffered

  8. The Story of Ratner, Gerald The irony was that Ratner had used these remarks before in speeches and had been quoted in the financial press. But this time the comments made front pages in the popular papers. As he later reflected, ‘Because of one ill-judged joke, 25,000 people lost their jobs’ (quoted in Tibbals, 1999 pg 192)
