The Standards for Mathematical Practices (SMP) in Action Bill Barnes August 28, 2012 HCPSS Professional Development Day
Standards for Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. CCSSO (2010)
Focus on Critical Thinking and Mathematical Processes Evolved from • NCTM’s process standards of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections • Strands of mathematical proficiency specified in the National Research Council’s report Adding It Up
Classroom Expectations • The SMP represent varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students • Each and every mathematics lesson should include opportunities for students to develop (and demonstrate proficiency) of at least one of the practices.
Connections to PARCC Assessment Practice Forward Task A task that is intentionally designed to elicit one or more Standards for Mathematical Practice in connection to specified content standards. PARCC ASSESSMENT FRAMEWORK (2011)
Connection to Teacher Accountability System • Student Learning Domain (NEW) • Teachers will select two of four indicators as an area of focus* • INDICATOR 6A Demonstrates Growth in Common Core State Standards in Literacy • INDICATOR 6B Demonstrates Growth in Common Core State Standards in Mathematical Practice • INDICATOR 6C Demonstrates Growth in Maryland STEM Standards through Creative Problem-Solving • INDICATOR 6D Demonstrates Growth in Content-Specific Curriculum Objectives
INDICATOR 6B Demonstrates Growth in Common Core State Standards in Mathematical Practice (SMP) • Overarching Habits of Mind of a Mathematical Productive Thinker (SMP 1&6) • Reasoning and Explaining (SMP 2&3) • Modeling and Using Tools (SMP 4&5) • Seeing Structure and Generalizing (SMP 7&8)
In Small Groups…(25 minutes) • “Unpack” on cluster of SMP by reviewing 1) anticipated student proficiencies and 2) questions to guide planning • Think about and discuss the impact on your professional practice. • What will you have to do differently to ensure that students are developing these practices? • What evidence will you collect to support this development?
In Small Groups…(25 minutes) Select from among a set of tasks and… • Work collaborative to complete the task • Think about and discuss the SMP that you exhibited while solving the problem • Discuss implications for instructional planning and classroom instruction
Expectations for Transition • Deepen your understanding of the SMP and your role in developing these behaviors • Engage in collaborative planning cycles with a specific focus on the development of targeted SMP
