  1. Measurement and Data Module 4 - Week 1 Standards for Mathematical Practices

  2. Activating Prior Knowledge:Name that SMP • On the following 5 slides, a series of different pictures will be displayed • When a picture is displayed, discuss with your group which mathematical practice(s) the picture best exemplifies and why

  3. Name that SMP!

  8. Get Metacognitive! • Think about your thinking as you work through the following task:

  9. You Do • Mario has a wall in his room that measures 13 feet long and 8 ½ feet high and is freshly painted. He wants to hang his favorite posters on the wall. Each poster measures 3 feet by 2 feet. What is the greatest number of posters that he can hang on the wall so that the posters do not overlap?

  10. We Do • Consider the thinking required to complete the poster task. • Analyze • Identify which SMPs were involved in the task. Why? How? • What standard(s) at your grade level support the development of or extend the measurement understandings required to complete the task? • How could the task be adapted to meet the standards at your grade level?

  11. Linda M. Gojak, President of NCTM, Clarifies We do not “teach” the practices. We must design our instruction around tasks that give students the opportunity to use and develop practices in learning and doing mathematics everyday, not only in mathematics class but in all aspects of their lives that include the potential for mathematical thinking. Linda M. Gojak, NCTM President, Cutting to the Common Core in Mathematics February 2013

  12. Resource Time • Decide which SMP(s) you’d like to focus on. (choose one or two of the SMPs) • Independently explore web sites (on handout) and find measurement and data tasks to share with your grade level. • Share and discuss tasks with your grade level.

  13. Debrief • Share a brief description of the tasks you found with your grade level. • Select at least two of the tasks to refine over the COURSE of the Measurement and Data module

  14. Reflection How did today’s training impact your understanding of these standards? No impact Some impact Significant impact What ahas did you have today? What questions do you still have about this domain?
