  3. Adjectives • Některá anglická přídavná jména mají své „silné ekvivalenty“ • funny, big, small, cold, atd. mají obyčejný význam • můžeme je stupňovat, abychom jim dodali na důrazu (big - bigger – the biggest)

  4. as …. as 1/ When the things have same characteristics Katie is as tall as her sister. Sadie is as pretty as Katie. 2/ comparing two things: The baby is not as happy as the girl. The baby has not got as long hair as her older sister. Katie Sadie

  5. Comparative and superlative • Most adjectives are gradable: 1/ regular small – smaller – the smallest expensive – more expensive – the most expensive 2/ irregular bad- worse – the worst Ex. She is the smartest girl in the class. She is smaller than me.

  7. Někdy je ale potřeba použítvýraznějšího zdůrazněného / přehnaného výrazu. Tehdy použijeme jejich silné ekvivalenty. • V češtině tato přídavná jména máme také: ex.: Něco je velké (big), a něco je obrovské (huge). Něco může být dobré (good), a něco vynikající (excellent).

  8. Examples of absolute adjectives • Give the absolute version of the following adjectives: 1/ bad 2/ tired 3/ funny 4/ good 5/ angry 6/ excited awful exhausted hilarious excellent furious thrilled

Grammar: absolute adjectives • Nemají druhý a třetí stupeň • Nelze je používat s jistými příslovci (very, extremely, fairly, slightly apod.) • Nelze tedy říci:This book is excellent, but that book is even more excellent. • Jako druhý a třetí stupeň silných přídavných jmen se používá druhý a třetí stupeň jejich slabých ekvivalentů:huge - bigger – the biggestexcellent - better – the bestfascinating - more interesting – the most interesting
