Professional Development Presentation REED 526 Organizing, Implementing, and Evaluating School Reading Programs
INTRODUCTION • The International Reading Association supports the notion that the best teachers of reading are the most knowledgeable. To set the bar for this, they created Standards for Reading Professionals and Standard 6 states: • Candidates recognize the importance of, demonstrate, and facilitate professional learning and leadership as a career-long effort and responsibility. • 6.1: Demonstrate foundational knowledge of adult learning theories and related research about organizational change, professional development, and school culture. • 6.2: Display positive dispositions related to their own reading and writing and the teaching of reading and writing, and pursue the development of individual professional knowledge and behaviors. • 6.3: Participate in, design, facilitate, lead, and evaluate effective and differentiated professional development programs. • 6.4: Understand and influence local, state, or national policy decisions.
TASK You will use the internet to find accurate and current information about your section of the Common Core Standards. You will create a 45 minute professional development session to share information related to the standards, including a summary of research and specific, helpful teaching strategies to support instruction related to that standard. • Use the web, EBSCO, and the Common Core Standards Website • (http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf ) to • help you plan for your presentation. Work with your partner(s) in the • online classroom, through email, or other online format to plan and share • ideas. 2. Synthesize the research by creating a PowerPoint presentation that can be viewed by all class members. Include a summary of key research points, and specific teaching ideas. These may be summarized on a slide and/or connected to a linked website, article, podcasts, webinars, or videos to support your information. (In other words, the slides will summarize but the links will include more!) 3. Include a bibliography of helpful resources to support the teaching toward those standards.
PROCESS • 1. Use Google, Bing, Yahoo, or other search engines to search your topic on the web. Review each website and determine the quality, using the criteria suggested at http://guides.library.jhu.edu/content.php?pid=198142&sid=1657518 http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html Make sure to use credible sites. • 2. Use Ebscohost to find articles related to your topic. Provide a direct link that connects the article on the powerpoint- use the permalink.
PROCESS (CONT.) 3. After reading the information on the websites and in the articles, create a PowerPoint presentation to synthesize the most important information. Make sure the PowerPoint is visually appealing yet effective. See the list below for suggestions on effective PowerPoint presentations: • http://mason.gmu.edu/~montecin/powerpoint.html • http://www.nvcc.edu/home/lshulman/PowerPoint.htm • http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/skills/presentations.aspx
PROCESS (CONT.) 4. Summarize briefly the research to support the standard. 5. Provide specific, helpful instructional ideas to support the standard. Look for some that are easily adaptable or provide some for the span of grade levels in your standards. You can also explain a teaching idea and then give suggestions for making it appropriate for other grade levels.(Most or all of this is usually included in the link if you find the ideas on the internet.)
PROCESS (CONT.) 5. Create a bibliography of the most helpful resources. Title it “Bibliography for ________” and provide a title and the url or link for each resource. 6. Email the entire powerpoint to me at least 3 days before the presentation. 7. Lead a small group presentation and discussion about the content provided in your powerpoint. Make sure to plan for discussion and interactive activities. 8. Write a reflection about your learning through this process. Think about the content you learned, the process of completing the task, and your group’s collaboration, as you reflect upon your learning.
CONCLUSION • After completing this webquest assignment, you should be able to create a PowerPoint presentation to share information related to a section of the Common Core Standards. Additionally, you should gain accurate, up-to-date and helpful information about the topic you explored. You should also gain new knowledge by viewing the projects of other class members.
SUGGESTION FOR COMPONENTS • Slide 1 – Title Page • Slide 2 – Questions to consider • Slides 3-5 – Summary of current theory – provide links to articles or sources • Slides 6-12, 13, or 14 – Specific teaching ideas or strategies to support your topic – provide descriptions or links to descriptions and examples • Slide 13, 14, or 15 – Bibliography – provide a list of all sources used – use APA format • (This is just a suggested- the length will be determined on what you have to share – just keep time limit of 45 minutes for the actual presentation/discussion.
