  2. Imperialism • Formal Imperialism: establish a new government. Can be direct or indirect. Constantly changing due to resistance • Informal: more subtle, carving out zones for ports and different privileges • Not a new concept

  3. New Imperialism • 19th c. sees a change • Reasons: • Industrial Revolution: created new economic needs for raw materials • Liberal Revolutions: new views of world • Rise of nation states: encouraging social reform abroad
