  1. A New Way to Use Semicolons Mrs. Cline November 2012

  2. What We’ve Seen • Semicolons separate two thoughts linked thematically: • He never wanted this famous actor gig; in fact, he wanted to sleep in every day.

  3. What’s New • Semicolons can separate items in a list, IF those items require commas to separate other actions, modifiers, or list items • EX: The following crew members were on the bridge: James T. Kirk, captain of the Enterprise; Mr. Spock, first science officer; Mr. Sulu, helmsman; Mr. Scott, engineer; and Dr. McCoy, chief medical officer.

  4. Use a semicolon to separate two main clauses joined with conjunctive adverbs such as ALSO, FINALLY, HENCE, HOWEVER, INSTEAD, NEXT, THEREFORE, and THUSEX: Nicko waited three hours for the bus; finally it came.

  5. Do NOTTTTT use a semicolon in place of a comma, a dash, or a colon

  6. Add semicolons in where necessary. • The jaguar was travelling along the highway at great speed it failed to negotiate a turn. • Great minds think alike fools seldom differ. • At the staff party, all the men gathered in the den to watch the hockey game the women sat in the living room.

  7. Add semicolons where necessary • The meal consisted of the following: a garden salad with Italian dressing, a baked potato with sour cream and chives, New York strip steak, cooked to perfection, steamed carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower, and blueberry cheesecake for dessert. • Sid and Nancy just bought a new car consequently Nancy started looking for a second job.
