Chapter 17.1 Progressivism Let’s make us some Progress!
Think… • What are some of the negative things happening in American cities at the dawn of the 20th century • Crowded, dirty cities • Child labor • Harsh, dangerous workplace • Etc.
Effort to grab some reform… • The so-called “Progressive Movement” • Four main goals • Protecting social welfare • Promoting moral development • Economic reform • efficiency
Social Welfare • Help the poor • Build community centers • YMCA – libraries, pools, handball courts • Efforts to improve lives of women and children • Limit child labor • Limit working hours for women
Moral Improvement • Prohibition • Women’s Christian Temperance Movement – starts small in Cleveland, eventually grows to about 245,000 members • Carrie Nation – tall old lady who busted up bars with a hatchet – paid her fines by selling souvenir hatchets • Also built kindergartens for immigrants and worked for women's suffrage
Economic Reform • Workers Party – challenging model of capitalism • “Muckrakers” expose corruption in business • Limits put on child labor • Limits on work hours eventually enforced • Compensation for families of workers hurt or killed on the job
Efficiency • Breaking manufacturing tasks down • Assembly lines • People work like machines – high turnover due to injuries – often due to fatigue • Also streamline/cleanup government
What about today’s America? • What areas of modern society could use a little dose of progress? • Let’s discuss!
