  2. Abstinence • Difficult because • Portrayed in movies • On T.V. • In advertisements. • Curiosity • People do not think clearly when faced with sexual feelings.

How to commit to Abstinence • Establish priorities in life • Set personal limits on the ways in which you are willing to express affection. • Share your feelings with your partner. • Discuss your feelings and concerns with a trusted adult. • Avoid high pressure situations • If you are currently sexually active, re-evaluate.

  4. Using Refusing • Talk with your partner about your decision. • State your position simply and firmly. • Insist on stopping. • Back away. • Explain why you want to stop. • Say no and make sure your body language say’s no.

  5. Consequences of Sexual Activity • STD’s • Unplanned pregnancy • Loss of self-respect • Negative effects on social relationships • Family disapproval

  6. Marital Adjustment • How well people adjust to marriage and each other. • Factors effecting marital adjustment • Agreement on critical issues in relationship. • Share common interests and activities. • Demonstrate affections and shared confidences. • Have few complaints about the marriage. • Had a close association before marriage.

  7. Teen Marriages • Females between 14 and 17 are twice as likely to divorce as females who wait until they are older. • ¾ of all teen couples who marry because of pregnancy divorce within six years.

  8. Conflict in Marriage • Requires both partners to demonstrate • Respect • Trust • Care for one another • Resolve conflicts fairly • Not damaging you or your partners self-esteem.

  9. Causes of Conflict • Differences in spending and saving habits • Conflicting loyalties involving friends and families • Intimacy or sexual problems • Jealousy • Housework • Decisions about having children and child care

  10. Parenthood • Parents need to set limits and establish a clearly defined set of rules. • Goal- for a child to be self-directed. • Provide guidance and instill values. • Give unconditional love.

  11. Setting Limits • Act quickly so children understand the link between behavior and consequences. • Be consistent so that children know what to expect. • Distinguish between the behavior, and the child. • Praise positive behavior.
