Case study 10-Group 5 Impact Assessment of the Effect of Tsetse Control on Livestock Productivity
Major Features • Longitudinal monitoring study (cows and their calves – followed over time) • Tsetse control to reduce trypanosome Prevalence • Drug resistance (Infectious disease modelling) • Two interventions • Farmer involvement (interest of community) • Before/after type of study
Data • Measured – PCV, presence/absence of trypanosomes, body weight, calving, deaths, herd size, tsetse density, sales etc • Three stage analysis • Summarized the data into 6-monthly averages • Seasons within intervention period • Baseline information
Two stage analysis process • From 6-monthly data LSMs using GenStat • Then used LSMs in a Statistical Model to compare means in periods with/without tsetse control
Enhancement of teaching • Study brings in different types of variables • Study design – multilevel in nature (nesting) • Model:- season effect, period effect, control effect, interaction of period and control • Season is nested within treatment and treatment within period • Construction and comparison of a series of models • Monthly data – serial correlations, times series, etc
