Typical Day in Mrs. Whalen’s Class: • Students utilize reading notebooks to deepen and challenge their understandings of reading strategies and story elements while working in cooperative groups. • Students will quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. • Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts,building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. • What does small group instruction look like? • Inquiry circle – book clubs • one on one conferencing- teacher with student • Reading strategies - 6 strategies

Typical Day in Mrs. Lump’s Class: • Students begin their day with a focus question to help guide group discussions/activities. All activities, charts, graphs, investigations are documented in each individual’s Science Notebook. • Students will use the Scientific Method when doing investigations-design, test and communicate; complete hands-on project based learning projects- help grasp each unit being taught
Students are investigating mathematical relationships Students are constructing and testing conjectures. They are justifying their approaches to solving problems. Math Goal: Develop a sense of mathematics as a logically interconnected body of ideas to be explored rather than a set of discrete facts and procedures to be memorized. Math
Math Journals: Students answer proposed mathematical questions using words, pictures, and justify their conjectures. Manipulatives: Students utilize these to deepen and challenge their understandings of math concepts while working in cooperative groups. A Typical Day in Mrs. Bennett’s Class: • Students begin each block with daily geography questions. This reviews basic geography concepts and reinforces language with the development of sentence structure. • Students create a living textbook through note-taking, activities, and discussions showing complete understanding of the topic. • Students receive weekly homework in the form of a Question of the Day (QOTD). The QOTD reinforces concepts taught in class, but can also preview new information

AGENDAS Parent Initials Parents are required to sign each and every night that they have reviewed their child’s homework for completion. This includes reading minutes also.
