Brazilian Aquaculture According to IBAMA (2009), data from 2007: Brazil's fisheries production: 1,090,000 tons Brazil's aquaculture production: 290,000 t (25.55% from total fisheries) Brazil's freshwater aquaculture production: 210,000 t (72% from total aquaculture) Brazil's mariculture production: 80,000 t (28% from total aquaculture)
Brazilian Potential 8,500 Km of sea coast; 4.3 millions km² of EEZ; 5 millions hectares of flooded lands, reservoirs (potential for the production of 5-10 million ton/year); Growing consumption – from 6.8 kg/hab/year in 2002 to 8 Kg/hab/year in 2004 – Amazon consumption is 36 kg/hab/year; A FAO recommends 12 kg/hab/year; Brazil would have conditions to participate of the world-wide market with 10 million tons, according to FAO; Current production/capture of 1 million tons.
