  1. Preparation for the Coming SLOs Dr. John R. Schmidt

  2. Disclaimer and Explanation In the actual presentation, I made the point that what we were about to experience was only one person’s point of view – mine. My purpose was to make everybody in the room think about the pending shift to Outcomes-Based Accreditation and how we might affect that change. Consider attending future conferences in which the Guidance Committee will undoubtedly include workshops on specific topics to help us make this transition. My thanks to all who attended this presentation. • Dr. John R. Schmidt, Ferris State University ACCE Mid-Year Meeting, Tampa, 21 February 2014

  3. Outcomes-Based Accreditation

  4. PROVE IT ! What? ! Of course I can estimate work! But I really know this stuff . . . My alarm clock broke. Final ? ! Why do I have to take the final ? !

  5. Outcomes-Based Accreditation Define Define MASTERY CAPSTONE

  6. Capstone Experience and Signature Courses Some form of a Culminating Experience • Typically, a “project management” course. • Team exercises, running through a project. • Internships (akin to student teaching for educators). • Co-Ops. • A unique course in your program. • Service Learning Project. • Others.

  7. Estimating Introduce Reinforce Master • Reading plans • Using Scales • Understanding how to use a computer • Simple QTOs • Using Timberline or other specific SW • Calculating simple crew productivity • Apply all previously learned concepts to a project estimate

  13. The Process Outcomes Assess Action Results

  14. Outcomes Student Learning Outcomes Program Learning Outcomes Course Learning Outcomes

  15. Outcomes __________ estimates Can the student create new product or point of view? (ACCE’s) SLO Student Learning Outcomes Common Action Words: assemble construct create design develop formulate write SLO #4: CREATE construction project cost estimates Bloom’s Taxonomy as revised in 1990’s

  16. Outcomes Student Learning Outcomes Program Learning Outcomes Course Learning Outcomes

  17. Outcomes One program’sexample of possible PLOs. Program Learning Outcomes PLO 1. Communication: Create and deliver effective oral, visual, and written presentations. 2. Materials, Methods, & Practices: Analyze the physical elements, their inter-relationships, and the procedures necessary to complete a construction project. 3. Ethics: Evaluate construction processes using ethical principles. 4. Risk: Understand Construction Risk Management. 5. Technology: Apply technologies throughout the construction process. 6. Management: Analyze a construction project by applying technical and managerial skills.

  18. Outcomes Student Learning Outcomes Program Learning Outcomes Course Learning Outcomes

  19. Outcomes One program’sexample of CONM 211: Construction Quantity Estimating. Course Learning Outcomes CLO Upon completion the student will be able to: • Search the bid documents for general cost items. • Perform quantity takeoff for the excavation, concrete, structural steel and carpentry. • Calculate productivity rate, total number of work hours, total days and the labor and equipment unit costs for numerous activities. • Compile an entire bid proposal including pricing, subcontractor quote and overhead for a project, and unbalance the bid. • Complete the Bid forms correctly according to the Instructions to Bidders and submit at a simulated public bid opening. • Develop estimating spreadsheets for a computerized quantity takeoff and pricing and summarizing the estimated costs..

  20. The Process Outcomes Assess Action Results

  21. Assess What to Assess? SLOs . . . PLOs (if different & mapped) . . . ?But NOT CLOs ! How to Assess? Tests Questions ; Case Studies ; Lab Reports ; Homework Problems ; Peer Assessments ; Team Evaluations ; Practicums ; Other Reports Define Success.  e.g., 75% of students will earn at least 85% on this assessment. Schedule Assessment.  When & how often? End of course? End of "signature" or "capstone" experience?

  22. The Process Outcomes Assess Action Results

  23. Results Track & record the results of these assessments. For example: Review of 35 capstone projects revealed 95% were able to satisfactorily complete all except the estimating activity. Only 65% of the students successfully completed that portion.

  24. The Process Outcomes Assess Action Results

  25. Action Close the Loop ! For example: Program faculty will discuss the students' estimating weaknesses at the August retreat, with changes incorporated in the following semester.

  31. Prescriptive Based Accreditation ALL of the Textbooks Every textbook and course pack for every course in the degree program !

  32. Prescriptive Based Accreditation Team 7 Project 1 Representative samples of student work for every course in the degree program ! Team 1 Project 1 Team 3 Project 1 Good, Average, And Poor ! Student Work

  33. Prescriptive Based Accreditation vs Outcomes Based Accreditation

  34. Outcomes Based Accreditation

  35. Outcomes Based AccreditationA New Approach!

  36. Outcomes Based AccreditationA New Approach! Course Materials SLO # 3 SLO # 4 SLO # 5 SLO # 6 SLO # 1 SLO # 2 A binder for each of the 20 ACCE SLOs ! . . . . through SLO # 20

  37. Outcomes Based AccreditationA New Approach! ALL of the Textbooks ? Good Question ! What is the value ? Perhaps only for those courses tied to the SLOs?

  38. Outcomes Based AccreditationA New Approach! Team 7 Project 1 Representative samples of student work to prove compliance with the ACCE SLOs ! (Not every program course!) Team 1 Project 1 Team 3 Project 1 STILL . . . Good, Average, And Poor ! Student Work
