The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)and the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS)
Work plan • Three main points as in Business Plan: • CoML responsibilities/commitments • Continue data system after 2010 • Work with Governments to increase value of biogeographic data • Concrete actions • What is feasible under three scenarios with different support?
Integration with IOC/IODE • Scenario 1 (no support) • Will have to rely on ‘volunteers’ in the OBIS and IODE community • Implementation through collaborative work in GE • Scenario 2 (support for Programme Officer) • Integration will be one of the main priorities of the PO • Scenario 3 (support for core secretariat) • Same as Scenario 2
Support CoML Synthesis • Scenario 1 • OBIS ED will have to make this the priority; no other staff after end 2009 • Scenario 2 • If support for PO becomes available in 2010 through IOC, Sloan support can be used to increase effort, and better support CoML • Scenario 3 • No problem • Will still need extra funding for specific tasks – on project basis
Increasing uptake in scientific community • Scenario 1 • No resources for pro-active work • Scenario 2 • No resources for pro-active work • SCOR/IODE working group on data publication • Scenario 3 • Work with scientists to facilitate analysis and stimulate data publication through OBIS • Brochure, presentations…
OBIS Technology • Scenario 1 • No resources in OBIS • Will have to rely on OBIS and IODE communities • Scenario 2 • Same as scenario 1 • Scenario 3 • Progress as planned
Education, training and outreach • Scenario 1 • No resources • Scenario 2 • Undergraduate Certificate program? • Scenario 3 • Undergraduate Certificate program • Limited demonstrator applications • Other demonstrators with project funding
Cooperative arrangements • Scenario 1 • Cooperative arrangements with IOC and others will be the sole resources for OBIS • Will have to be forged by ‘volunteers’ • Scenario 2 • One of the high priorities • Essential to do practical/technical work • Scenario 3 • Cooperative arrangements will be a two-way street
