Wireless Expansion Update and 3 year plan considerations Greg Redder greg.redder@colostate.edu, 1-7222 Academic Computing & Networking Services 3/31/09
Agenda • Review • Status • 3 year plan considerations
Spring 2009 Project Review • Supplemental funding was allocated for Spring 2009 upgrades in Clark and Morgan Library • One-time UTFAB funding of $180K plus University contribution of $90K • Board expressed interest in receiving a proposal to continue wireless upgrades Wireless Expansion Proposal
Spring 2009 Project Review • Upgrade Clark A (all floors) to latest wireless standards and supporting high-density utilization. • Upgrade Clark C (all floors) to latest wireless standards and supporting high-density utilization. • Upgrade Morgan (all floors) to latest wireless standards and supporting high-density utilization. • Redeploy some wireless devices removed from above locations to supplement wireless in other buildings.
Status • All equipment in-house. • Morgan: 90% completed. Completing this week. • Clark A: Need to mount some on the higher ceilings. Activated by end of next week. • Clark B: Cabling completed and APs mounted. Activation end of next week.
Note • Easy Access Wireless deployed • No VPN necessary! • Secure and Authenticated • Docs at: http://www.acns.colostate.edu/?page=wireless • ULC (“TILT”, “Old Music”) completed.
Morgan Before/After Wireless Expansion Proposal
“Top 10” Wireless Expansion Proposal
“Top 10” continued… • UTFAB addressed the most significant wireless deficiencies by upgrading wireless in: • Clark A • Clark C • Morgan • Remaining buildings have 100 simultaneous wireless users or less. Wireless Expansion Proposal
Discussion: Establishing Priorities • Goals • Priorities • Coverage • Entire Buildings • Outdoor • Non-GA buildings • Approximate costs Wireless Expansion Proposal
Goals • Provide state-of-the-art/high-speed wireless to all general assignment classrooms • Provide for next generation solutions: • Mobile apps • Mobile VOIP • Seamless transition between buildings, including outside? Wireless Expansion Proposal
Priorities: • Considerations: • Problems with Education, Eddy and Plant Sciences reported via UTFAB members. • Engineering: 18 classrooms, 1072 seats – oldest wireless. • Heavy usage in Vis. Arts. Wireless Expansion Proposal
Eddy: 25 rooms, 1146 seats, 27Mbits/sec wireless Wireless Expansion Proposal
Education: 8 rooms/289 seats, 11Mbits/sec wireless. Wireless Expansion Proposal
Engineering: 18 rooms, 1072 seats, 11Mbits/sec wireless Wireless Expansion Proposal
Plant Sciences: 3 rooms 406 seats, 27Mbit/sec wireless Wireless Expansion Proposal
Visual Arts: 2 room, 152 seats, 14 27Mbit/sec wireless Wireless Expansion Proposal
Coverage: Entire building vs. just GA classrooms? (i.e.: Engineering, Chemistry) • Pros: • Complete and consistent coverage of a facility. • Students do spend time in labs, offices, non-classroom areas. • Cons: • Do you want to spend money on areas not as heavily concentrated with students? Wireless Expansion Proposal
Outdoor Coverage? • Currently: • Area between Morgan/Clark/Lory • Monfort Quad • Water Plaza • Lory west side Wireless Expansion Proposal
Outdoor coverage map Wireless Expansion Proposal
Non-Academic Buildings • Lory • Others? Wireless Expansion Proposal
Approximate costs (cover entire building) • 50 cents per ft2 indoor* *Based on cost for completing Morgan/Clark and recent quote for Eddy. Wireless Expansion Proposal
Approximate Costs (cover only classrooms) • Per seat: $32* *Average of cost to cover Clark A and cost to cover Eddy. Not including cabling. **Per seat cost model differs with full building coverage. ***Pending physical layout Wireless Expansion Proposal
Discussion and Thanks • The new wireless at Clark and Morgan is state-of-the-art. • Where to go next? • Thank you for your continued input and direction!
