Feathers-modified scales with 2 fx: provides lift for flight & conserves body heat Down feathers-soft, fluffy; cover body of young birds & provide insulating undercoat in adults Contour feathers-give adults their streamlined shape & provide coloration and additional insulation 5. Flight feathers- specialized contour feathers on the wings & tail
