  2. Principles and Element of Art • Line- is the path of a point moving through space. • Shape / Form- implies spatial form and is usually perceived as two-dimensional. Form has depth, length, and width and resides in space. It is perceived as three-dimensional. • Color- all come from the three primaries and black and white. They have three properties – hue, value, and intensity. • Value- refers to relative lightness and darkness and is perceived in terms of varying levels of contrast. • Texture- refers to the tactile qualities of a surface (actual) or to the visual representation of such surface qualities (implied). • Space- refers to the area in which art is organized. Perspective is representing a volume of space or a 3-dimensional object on a flat surface

  4. Art Genres Cubism- an early 20th-century style and movement in art, esp. painting, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and, later, collage. Origin

  5. Art Genres Surrealism- a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. Origin

Art Genres Realism- in the arts may be generally defined as the attempt to represent subject matter truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding artistic conventions, implausible, exotic and supernatural elements. The term originated in the 19th century, and was used to describe the work of Gustave Courbet and a group of painters who rejected idealization, focusing instead on everyday life

  7. Art Genres Pop Art- art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, esp. as a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values

  8. My Favorite Genre • Man Ray was an American modernist artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal.
