  3. The Power of Mass Collaboration • Key points of Mass Collaboration • Collective Action of potentially 1,000 of people with a specific goal. It is often carried out through the use of social software on the internet. • Information is “raw” and while one person may not have his voice heard, when you combine thousands it comes across loud and clear. As Time magazine states,” We’re ready to balance our diet of predigested news with raw feeds from Baghdad and Boston and Beijing. You can learn more about how Americans live just by looking at the backgrounds of YouTube videos—those rumpled bedrooms and toy-strewn basement rec rooms—than you could from 1,000 hours of network television.”

  4. The Pioneers • EBay is a popular online shopping and auction website. Millions of items are bought and sold daily, that range from collectables to automobiles. This collaborative shopping site brings together shoppers and sellers worldwide thus giving sellers access to an audience of buyers greater than 200 million. Many success stories can be found showing ordinary people opening and starting a business overnight and beating the sales of “brick and mortar” competitors. • YouTube (a Google subsidiary) is a popular video sharing website. It allows users to post and view videos over the web for free. You Tube has played a significant role in letting users get information out in the “raw” to a large audience causing disruption in communications media around the world. • Second Life is a virtual world in which users, from around the world, can meet and interact through motional avatars. They can also do business using virtual money called “Linden Dollars” which is exchangeable for US Dollars. A Business Week 2006 cover story appeared about a Second Life entrepreneur. It featured how he became the first Second Life Millionaire by selling virtual goods on the web site.

  6. Does it ever feel like you are herding cats? • How do you manage creativity or innovation? • “It has been said that the process of management of innovation is a lot like herding cats (lots of confusion, not much progress made, and very frustrating.) We prefer to think of it as providing the right environment and fitting innovators into the organizational structure in a clever manner. - Lawrence Husick • Collaboration Across Organizational Lines to Promote Innovation: http://managinginnovation.net
