General Overview • ELIME is a an Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grant • Promote establishment of library and information science education in the MENA region by partnering with the American University in Cairo and Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco • fund six doctoral students at UNC

  3. Meeting Needs • Locally trained professionals in the MENA region • Up-to-date LIS continuing educationfocused on online materials, digital libraries and curation • Librarians in the United States who are more knowledgeable about Middle Eastern society and culture

  4. Accomplishments • 2011 Workshop at AUI • Archives & Records Management Fundamentals • Two additional fellows selected for 2012-2013 • Webinars • Marketing Library Services • User Instruction • MELA/MESA • Increased web presence

Christina Daltoso • Research Interest: Information literacy, including information literacy standards used in the Middle East and how they reflect the needs of their communities. • Current Project: Collaborating with a colleague to look at the gaps in teaching information literacy skills to high school students, compared to what college professors expect their students to know. • Traveled to Jordan during the summer of 2008 for an archaeological dig, and became increasingly interested in Middle Eastern culture and language.

  8. Sumayya Ahmed • Research Interest: Digital Cultural Heritage as it relates to Arabic and Islamic manuscripts. Specifically, the technological and social issues associated with digitizing manuscripts in Morocco. • Summer 2012 FLAS Awardee - For Advanced Manuscript Study in Arabic in Morocco • Summer 2012 Volunteer at the National Library of Morocco in Rabat • Presentations: • “ Women of Learning: Female Islamic Scholarship in Morocco,” SERMEISS Spring Conference, 17 – 18 March 2012, Chapel Hill, NC • “AndalusianAstronomers: Connecting Manuscripts on Astronomy from Early Islamic Spain,” accepted for presentation at The Islamic Manuscript Association, 8th Islamic Manuscript Conference at Queen’s College, University of Cambridge, 9 – 11 July 2012

Amanda Click • Research Interest: Information literacy in the Arab world, particularly student perceptions of academic integrity and ownership of information. • Awards: Summer 2012 FLAS Awardee, George Atiyeh Prize (MELA), ALA Emerging Leader • Presentations: • UNCG iDEAL Summit. Rethinking the Local: Re-imagining Libraries in a Flattening World. Greensboro, NC. 14 November 2011.
