Kudela Lab Projects Our Lab Welcome. Summary of what we do. People Contact Us Other links
Kudela Lab Home Projects Our Lab People Contact Us Other Links EXAMPLES: • Cal-PReEMPT: • Goal: implement an economically sustainable harmful algal bloom monitoring plan for the California coastline that exceeds current capabilities of the California Department of Public Health using new technologies for rapid toxin and species detection and tracking. • Lab point-person: Jenny Lane/Kendra Hayashi • Center for Integrated Marine Technology • Goal: “Wind to Whales”- link new technologies and data across disciplines of marine science to address key questions for the management and conservation of California coastal marine resources. • Lab point-person: Anna Rubin • http://cimt.ucsc.edu/
Gulf of Alaska Cruise, Aug 2007 • Goal: Study the impact of mesoscale eddies on the surrounding environment. Analyze cross-shelf transfer of nutrients, trace metals, and phytoplankton populations, and examine the relationship between bio-optical technology and biogeochemical parameters. • Lab point-person: Misty Blakely
Kudela Lab Home Projects Our Lab People Contact Us Other Links • What we do… tools, equipment, techniques we use for our research • i.e. LC/MS, ELISA, CTDs, WCP?, cultures, etc. • Remote Sensing and bio-optics – link to next slide
Remote Sensing One way that we study the oceans is through remote sensing. “Remote sensing” uses data collected by satellite, as well as instruments located on moorings, piers, AUV’s and ships, to better understand the ocean environment. • Current projects • River plume characterization • Proxy for particulate iron • pCO2 monitoring • Examples of optical instruments commonly used in our lab • Hobilabs HS-2 and HS-6 - backscatter and fluorescence • Wetlabs ACS - absorption and attenuation • TSRB – downwelling irradiance and upwelling radiance
