NEED FOR ACTION? • …. the feasibility of a network of physically-defined navigation routes and Traffic Separation Schemes (….) could be considered under the auspices of IMO …. • Along these routes, coastal States would be able to better monitor shipping movements off their coasts, including the monitoring and investigating of illicit discharges from ships, and be in a better position to respond to other emergencies.... • Ships would equally benefit from this accrued safety, being made aware in real time of any deviation from their route which could lead to an accident .... • .... this initiative could be seen as the natural complement of other projects, such as the Motorways of the Sea ..... source: ‘Towards improved marine and maritime cooperation in the Mediterranean’ (supporting document 12th FEMIP Conference)
