Duo Interpretation • Two people perform a piece from a published play, novel, short story, or musical for NFL guidelines • Cannot touch or make eye contact • Includes an introduction after the “teaser,” or the first minute or so of the opening, giving the author and title of the piece • NFL time limit is 8-10 minutes, BFL maximum is 10 • They will be evaluated on poise, use of voice, inflections, physical expression, and their ability to interpret characters correctly and consistently • Opportunity to compete in the USA • NFL Duo Interp Video

Dramatic/Prose Interpretation • Individual performance with selections drawn from novels, short stories, plays, movies, or TV shows • Includes an introduction after the “teaser,” or the first minute or so of the opening, giving the author and title of the piece • BFL time limit is 7 minutes • They will be evaluated on poise, use of voice, inflections, physical expression, and their ability to interpret characters correctly and consistently • NFL Dramatic Interp Video

Poetry • Can use classic or contemporary pieces of poetry that are already published, it is all about connecting to the audience • Style should stem from the author and the interpreter to convey the message to the audience • Create an argument with the pieces of poetry you choose • Includes an introduction after the “teaser,” or the first minute or so of the opening, giving the author and title of the piece • BFL time limit is 7 minutes • NFL Poetry Video

  5. Oratory • Oratory deals with a current problem in society and proposes a solution. Example: we need to not sweat the small stuff. Bad example: Love is important. Focus on an argument! • It is about alerting the audience to a danger, discussing the causes and creative solutions using evidence throughout, such as newspapers, journals, books, etc. • For NFL rules, no visual aids are permitted and the time limit is 8-10 minutes • Typical format is introduction, 2 problems, 2 causes, 2-3 solutions, conclusion • Opportunity to compete in the USA • NFL 2011 Oratory Champion

Coaching Tips • Be added to our dropbox file to look at sample scripts • Help each other out by posting comments and reflections on scripts that we are reading and what they are about • Starthrower.com for Inspirational short stories • Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for inspiration and Oratory topics, available on Amazon with the “Look Inside” option • Inogolo.com – pronunciation guide • Students can use a black binder/black pieces of paper if they don’t feel confident giving the speech from memory • Don’t be the only coach. Peer coaching is a great way to involve the students and prepare them for a larger audience • Set high expectations and standards, your students can rise to the challenge
