Before the Renaissance • Before the Renaissance, there was the Dark Ages. This was a time where the Black plague was killing people with the disease. It started in China but spread to France, Greece, and Italy.
Historical influences • 1492 – Christopher Columbus lands in the modern-day Bahamas and makes contact with the Arawaks • 1517 – Martin Luterh inspires the Protestant Reformation • 1521 – Ferdinand Magellan’s crew completes the first successful attempt at world navigation, but their leader is killed during the voyage • 1543 – Copernicus develops the first modern heliocentric theory theory of the solar system • 1503 – Leonardo da Vinci paints the Mona Lisa • 1558 - Elizabeth I begins her reign as queen of England • 1580 - Sir Francis Drake circumnavigates the globe • 1609 – Italian scientist Galileo Galilei studies the heavens with a telescope

Characteristics of Renaissance Music • Church music sung a cappella • Churches used Gregorian chant • Elizabeth Madrigals were performed in rich people’s homes • 16th century music consisted of more than one choir • Instruments were less important than voice • Richer texture in four or more parts. Bass part is added below the tenor • Blending rather than contrasting strands in the musical texture • Greater concern with the flow and progression of chords. • Secular music included vocal pieces and dances and lots of instrumental pieces
