  1. How far would you run for a Doughnut? By: Aya el-Husseini 6D

  2. Dictionary • Arithmetic = The mathematics of numbers, under addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. • Healthy decisions = decisions that lead to better health. Proper diet and exercise are the keys to great health. • Calories = A calorie is a unit of energy. When you hear something contains 100 calories, it's a way of describing how much energy your body could get from eating or drinking it.

  3. Learner Profile Words: • Caring: Students respect and care for each other • Knowledgeable: Students work hard and learn new things • Inquirer: Students are not afraid to ask • Thinker: Students think before they act • Balanced: Students have a balance between mind and body • Open-Minded: Students respect different ideas and beliefs • Reflective: Students look back to their actions • Principled: Students know what’s right and wrong • Risk-Takers: Students are not afraid to try new things • Communicators: Students communicate their ideas to others

  4. Q1. How does someone work out the number of calories they burn when running? To find out the ♯ of calories you burn, you have to: • Multiply the ♯ of Kms you run by the ♯ of Kgs you weigh • Now that you have that ♯ multiply it by 1.036 to get the ♯ of calories you burned! • Calories = Kilometers × Kilograms × 1.036

  5. Q2. How far would they have to run to burn the calories that are in a doughnut? • Ex. Well, lets say that someone that weighed 70kg ate a pumpkin doughnut that had 300 calories in it. To find out how far (kms) one would have to run to burn the calories we use the following formula: • Calories = Kms × kgs × 1.036 • 300 = kms × 70 × 1.036 • 300 = kms × 72.52 • kms = 300 ÷ 72.52 = 4.136 • So now one would have to run 4.136 kms to burn the 300 calories that are in a pumpkin doughnut.

  6. Q3. How can knowing how to do arithmetic with decimals help you make good health decisions? • Burning calories for a healthier body needs you to know arithmetic with decimals to get more accurate results for health measurements. The formula (calories = km × kg × 1.036) has a decimal figure (1.036) in it and some of the other factors might also include decimals. If one does not know how to work arithmetic with decimals, then they cant find out the correct answer for the calories they need to burn. In some cases, it might be unhealthy for one to eat the whole food. If one can’t work arithmetic, they cant know the number of portions they need to eat.

  7. Q4. Which part (or parts) of the learner profile did you develop during this unit? • Knowledgeable: about this unit when I learned about calories, weight and the formula for calories • Inquirer: I was not afraid to ask questions when I didn’t understand how the formula worked • Thinker: I thought about how I was going to get the ♯ of km one needs to run (Q2. and Q3.) • Reflective: In this power point I was reflective to what I learned in class about this unit.

  9. Extra: Junk Food, staying healthy • What is junk food? • Some foods have a high amount of calories and have little or no nutrition value. This type of food is referred to as ‘Junk Food’. Doughnuts are junk food. • Junk food is usually bad for you so it’s not good to have too much of it. To be healthy you have to maintain a healthy diet. This means exercising and eating fruits and vegetables. To do this you have to have different amounts of different food. From time to time you can eat junk food but have to exercise after that.
