Skillstreaming Skill 14: Introducing Yourself
Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Practicing this skill will help students know what to do when someone else introduces himself or herself. Skill 15, Beginning a Conversation, would be great to teach next so students can practice using these two skills together.
Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Our Steps: Step 1: Decide if you want to meet the person. Step 2: Decide if it is a good time. Step 3: Walk up to the person. Step 4: Introduce yourself. Step 5: Wait for the person to tell you his or her name.
Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Step 1: Decide if you want to meet the person. Before we actually meet someone, we need to decide if we want to meet them. Why might you want to meet a person? Do they look friendly or are they new to school?
Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Step 2: Decide if it is a good time. It is best to introduce yourself when the other person is not busy with something or someone else. Can you think of a good time at school when it would be good to introduce yourself to someone new?
Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Step 3: Walk up to the person. When you walk up to the person be sure to take notice to how much distance you leave between you and him or her. If you get too close the other person may feel threatened.
Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Step 4: Introduce yourself. Can you tell me ways to introduce yourself? How about, “Hi. My name is _____.”
Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Step 5: Wait for the person to tell you his or her name. (If he/she doesn’t tell you, ask.) If the person does not tell you his or her name after you have introduced yourself, what can you say? How should you ask a person what his or her name is?

Skill 14: Introducing Yourself Let’s Practice Here are some suggested activities. Practice these with your friends so you can become experts on Introducing Yourself. School: There is a new student in your classroom. Home: A friend of your parents is visiting your home. Peer Group: A new boy or girl moves into your neighborhood.
