Book 1 . The story begins Zeus allows Odysseus to leave Calypso’s Island after Athena asks him to. (Poseidon is absent from this meeting) Athena then appears to Telemachus (Odysseus’s son) and gives him advice on how to handle his mother and her suitors.

Book 1 • The story begins • Zeus allows Odysseus to leave Calypso’s Island after Athena asks him to. (Poseidon is absent from this meeting) • Athena then appears to Telemachus (Odysseus’s son) and gives him advice on how to handle his mother and her suitors. • Athena also suggests Telemachus go on a journey to Pylos and Sparta to talk with some of Odysseus’s war buddies. • Telemachus speaks out against the suitors and they just tease him right back. He begins to think of the voyage that Athena suggested he take. Main Characters: Athena, (Mentes) goddess of wisdom and courage. Telemachus – Son of Odysseus and Penelope. 16-18 yrs. old. Penelope – Wife of Odysseus. Suitors – Men from Ithaca and other nearby lands who want to marry Penelope, but are mooching. Setting:Odysseus’s Palace in Ithaca.
