Human Body Systems Chapters 28-34
Levels of organization in the Body • Cells • Tissues • Organs • Organ Systems • Organism
red blood cell nerve cell Cells • Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in the body • Egg + Sperm Cell = Zygote • Zygotedivides into embryonic Stem Cells • Stem Cells commit to becoming one specialized cell type • Develop specialized structures to carry out their functions
cell tissue Tissues • Tissues are groups of similar cells working together • Different types of tissues • Epithelial (skin, glands, ALL OVER) • Connective Tissue (BLOOD, BONES, CARTILAGE) • Muscle Tissue • Nervous Tissue
ORGANS ORGAN SYSTEM ORGANISM Organs • Organs are different tissues working together
Organ Systems • Organ system are two or more organs working together • There are 11 major organs systems in the body
ORGANS ORGAN SYSTEM ORGANISM Organism • An Organisms is all organ systems working together
1. Integumentary System • Components: Skin, Hair, Nails, Oil Glands, Sweat Glands • Functions: • Acts as a barrier again injury/infection • Protects against UV radiation • Helps to regulate body temperature
Integumentary System • 3 Layers of the Skin • Epidermis • Dermis • Hypodermis • Keratin: Tough Protein that waterproofs the skin • Skin Pigment is called Melanin
2. Skeletal system • Components: Bone, Cartilage, Ligaments, Tendons • Functions: • Supports and protects vital organs • Allows movement • Stores minerals • Serves as the site for red blood cell formation
Skeletal System • Axial Skeleton • Skull • Vertebrae • Rib Cage • Appendicular Skeleton • Pectoral Girdle • Pelvic Girdle • Limbs
3. Muscular System • Components: Skeletal Muscles • Functions: • Produces voluntary and involuntary movement
