What is a “Renaissance”? • French for “rebirth” • Refers to revival of art and learning • Bring back the style of Ancient Greece and Rome

Economics THE GOOD • Crusades increases overseas trade • Increased trade leads to urbanization • More cities and more travel = more exchanging of ideas THE BAD • Plague kills most of the workers • Survivors demand a raise • Merchants can’t afford to expand the business • Merchants pursue other interests
2. Development of Outside Interests • Merchants become involved in politics • Belief in individual achievement • Medici family • Wealthy banking family • ruled Florence

Should know the classics and be charming Little power or influence • All educated men should create art. • A “universal man” • Master every area of study • Should be witty, charming, good dancer, singer, musician, poet, skilled rider, wrestler, and swordsman
