  1. Muscular System DorcasHeu Lillie Black Kate Erickson

  2. Main role of the muscular system … … is to provide MOVEMENTS!

  3. Voluntary Muscles A voluntary muscle is any muscle that is normally under the control of the will.

  4. Involuntary Muscles An involuntary muscle is one that moves without you choosing to move it, such as heart muscle, and muscles involved in reflexes such as eye blinking.

  5. Skeletal Muscle • Voluntary muscles • You can control what they do! • Muscle works the bones to give your body power and strength! • It is held to the bones with the help of tendons.

  6. Tendon: a band of inelastic fibrous tissue that connects a muscle to a bone.

  7. … allows your body to do many types of jobs. Lift Push Pull

  8. Cardiac Muscle • The heart is made of cardiac muscle. • Muscles of the heart contract to pump blood out. • It lets blood back in after circulating through the body

  9. … cardiac muscles Squeezes the walls of the heart inward Most of the heart is made of cardiac muscles It never gets tired of pumping! Did you know … The heart beats about 100,000 times a day? An adult woman’s heart weighs about 8 ounces, a man’s about 10 ounces?

  10. Smooth Muscle • Involuntary muscles • … are at work in your stomach and digestive system. • Brain and body tells these muscles what to do without even thinking about it.

  11. … smooth muscles …come in handy if you’re sick and need to throw up. pushes food back out of the stomach so it comes up through the esophagus and out of the mouth. Bladder A woman’s uterus

  12. Major Organs of the Muscular System

  13. How many Muscles? • There are over 600 muscles in the human body • Ten major muscle groups, named according to: • their location • shape • action • bony attachments • size relationships

  14. 3 Major Functions of Muscles • Cause movement • Maintain posture • Generating Warmth

  15. Voluntary Muscles • Muscles we can control (connected to bones) • Throw a ball • Run • Stand up

  16. Involuntary Muscles • Cannot be controlled • Keep our heart beating • Move food through the digestive system

  17. 10 Major Muscle Groups • Deltoids • Back • Pectorals • Biceps • Triceps • Abdominal • Glutes • Quadriceps • Hamstrings • Calves

  18. Muscles. • Deltoids (Delts)-also known as the shoulders, consist of three superficial muscles, the anterior, middle and posterior. • Back- These muscles are used in shoulder movements and core stabilization.

  19. More Muscles. • Pectorals (Pecs)- otherwise known as the chest muscles • Biceps- The biceps are located on the front upper part of the arms and consist of two muscles, the biceps brachii, and the brachialis. • Triceps- The triceps are located on the back upper part of the arm

  20. MORE muscles. • Abdominals- The abs consist of three layers of muscle walls that run in different directions giving support to the core. • Quadriceps (Quads) - also known as the thighs, are located in the front, upper part of the leg. They consist of four muscles: • rectus femoris • vastusmedialis • vastusintermedius • vastuslaterlis

  21. Glutes- located posteriorly (the back uppermost part of the leg, above the hamstrings) consist of three powerful muscles • the gluteus maximus (which is the largest and most superficial) • the gluteus medius • the gluteus minimus

  22. Hamstrings- The hamstrings are located on the back, upper part of the leg, and are responsible for flexion of the knee. • Calves- The calf muscles are located on the back, lower part of the leg. Not this kind of calf…
