DD&R Division Mission The mission of the Decommissioning, Decontamination & Reutilization Division (DD&R) is to promote the development and use of those skills and technologies associated with the optimal management of decommissioning, decontamination & reutilization of nuclear and formerly nuclear installations, materials, facilities, and sites for the betterment of society. The target audience for this effort is first the membership of the Division, second the Society, and third the public at large.
Activities • Organize D&D technical sessions at the two ANS meetings each year (special attention to Hot Topics and emerging issues) • Sponsor or co-sponsor special conferences on a regular basis • Executive Conference, Topical Meetings, International Meetings • Provide Student Support • Scholarship Endowment Fund • Student support at ANS National Meetings • Support student conferences • Disseminate information on DD&R fields to interested parties • Cooperate with other scientific and professional groups with related objectives • Publish Semi-annual Division newsletter • Provide honors and awards for DD&R members for various meritorious activities • Support overall ANS activities (e.g., public education)

Issues • D&D opportunities reduced in the near term • Successful plant life extensions • Improved economics of operating plants • Lower priority given to D&D by DOE-EM • Too many D&D related meetings • Reduced attendance at Topical/Executive Conferences • One Topical meeting had to be cancelled • Reduced member interest and income
Goals • Prepare technical position papers on major issues • Develop D&D standards on a planned schedule • Integrate D&D activities within the overall nuclear power systems development framework • Develop mechanism for formal sharing of experiences/lessons learned between US (Commercial and Government) and International activities

Summary of D&D Activities Worldwide • Significant amount of D&D activities in progress • Initial sets of commercial nuclear plants undergoing D&D. • Over 50% of all research reactors worldwide are shutdown. Some reactors have been decommissioned. • Many non-power reactors are also in D&D across the world. • Resource availability for D&D is major issue for research reactors worldwide (financial and technical)
Recent DD&R Achievements • Updated website (http://ddrd.ans.org/) • Significantly enhanced Division newsletter • Full version on website; brief mailer • Current issue is ~30 pages long • Color photographs of facilities and equipment • Student scholarship fund fully endowed • Improved governance • Bimonthly Executive Committee telecon • Significant interactions between officers during year • Bylaw changes
Program Committee Plans • 2002 ANS Summer Meeting (6/02, Hollywood, FL) • 2002 SPECTRUM Conference (7/02, Reno, NV) • Co-sponsor with FCWMD • 2002 Winter Meeting (11/02, Washington, DC) • 2003 Summer Meeting (6/03 San Diego, CA) • Embedded topical Plans to have future joint meeting with NEI, EPRI in addition to other ANS Divisions (e.g. FCWMD)
Future Outlook • D&D landscape is changing • Commercial D&D activity has started to decrease; other elements should remain steady • In order to sustain vitality, DD&R Division will need to: • Place greater emphasis on re-utilization and re-licensing • Integrate close with overall nuclear development • Promote closer links between commercial/government/ international D&D activities • Co-sponsor significant topical meetings annually with other ANS divisions
