  1. Thought Starter When a vehicle won’t start – What could be the possibilities?

  2. Engine Compression What Why When How

  3. Goals and Objectives • Upon completion you will be able to: • List the components • Identify what compressionis. • What does it mean? • When to measure? • Find specifications. • How to measure. • List problems if not at spec.

  4. Compression • What creates compression? • Using ALLDATA – find a specification • How to do a test • What do the numbers mean?

  5. Components involved Valve Sealing Head Gasket Sealing Piston to cylinder wall Rings Connecting rod

  6. What is Compression Needed to compress air fuel mixture for ignition Piston at Bottom Dead Center Piston at Top Dead Center Piston and combustion chamber design Stroke Squeezing into small area Ratio: 10:1 or so Diesels higher

  7. Find the Specifications Using ALLDATA – or Mitchell On-Demand find compression pressure specifications for an engine How to do a compression test All spark plugs out – note location and condition Block throttle open Disconnect fuel - ground ign. Install gauge (hose-threads) Turn over 4 puffs. Record 1st and last reading Check all cylinders 10% Wet test – small amount oil

  8. Review Results Make chart of cylinders Note first and last Are they within 10%? Did wet test improve # considerably? Do we need a next test?

  9. NEXT TOPIC Cylinder Leak Tester Where did the air go?
