COMMON NOUN • A common noun names general items • Examples: coffee shop waiter jeans sandwich chair Nouns
PROPER NOUN • Names the people, counties, companies. • Proper Nouns are CAPITALIZED • Examples: Lazy Boy Daniels Learning Center Australia Captain Richard Orsini Nouns
CONCRETE NOUN • Concrete nouns name through your five senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. • Example: ice cream Sight: the color of the ice cream. Smell: the flavor of the ice cream Hearing: the sounds made when eating ice cream Taste: the flavor of the ice cream Touch: the texture of the ice cream Nouns
ABSTRACT NOUN • A noun names an idea, event, quality or concept. Examples: deceit dedication curiosity trust relaxation Nouns
NOUN FUNCTIONS Nouns
When a noun means only one, it is said to be singular. Examples: boy, girl, book, church, box SINGULAR NOUNS Nouns
When a noun means more than one, it is said to be plural. Examples: boys girls books, churches PLURAL NOUNS Nouns
RULE # 1 • The plural of nouns is usually formed by adding s to a singular noun. • Examples: • lamp lamps • cat cats • flower flowers Nouns
Exercise: Write the plural of each of these nouns. chair star farm storm door rock owner paper cup bear Nouns
Rule # 2: • Nouns ending in s, z, x, sh, and ch form the plural by adding es. • Example: • moss mosses • dish dishes • buzz buzzes • church churches Nouns
SPECIAL NOTE • If you add s to such nouns as fox, bush and bench, you will find that you cannot pronounce them without making an additional syllable. This is why such nouns form the plural by adding es. • Examples: • fox foxes • bush bushes • bench benches Nouns
Rule #3 • If the word has a consonant before the final 'y' then the plural ends with 'ies‘ SingularPlural bully becomes bullies pony becomes ponies canary becomes canaries spy becomes spies Nouns
Rule #4 • If the word has a vowel before the final y then you just add an 's': Singular Plural day becomes days delay becomes delays survey becomes surveys toy becomes toys Nouns
Rule #5 Nouns ending in the letter opreceded by a vowel form the plural by adding the letter s. Example: one radio two radios Some nouns ending in the letter o preceded by a consonant add es to form the plural Example: one potato two potatoes one zero two zeros-zeroes Nouns
Rule #6 Most nouns ending in the letters f, fe or ff form the plural by adding the letter s. Example: surf surfs Some nouns that end in f, fe or ff form the plural by changing the final f form to ves. Example: one wolf two wolves Nouns
Rule #7 If a singular noun ends in y and is preceded by a consonant, they is changed to i and es is added. butterfly - y + i + es = butterflies one butterfly two butterflies Nouns

Possessive nouns • Nouns used to show possession (owning, or having).
The dog's collar is too large. • Add 's to the end of a singular noun to make it possessive. • The word "dog's" is the possessive noun. It tells you that the noun "collar" belongs to the dog. • The dog owns, or possesses the collar.
The sky's color is changing. • sky + 's
We saw the children's snowman. • children + 's Add 's to the end of a plural noun that does not end with an s.
