GSFC Reflections on the SOMO Standards Program GSFC DATA SYSTEMS STANDARDS NTAG 4-25-2001 • Technically, the program is proceeding extremely well whereas greater SOMO management involvement is needed. GSFC is interested in bringing up certain concerns; and perhaps concerns of other field centers can be addressed here or sometime in the future.
GSFC Reflections on the SOMO Standards Program GSFC DATA SYSTEMS STANDARDS NTAG 4-25-2001 • a. Clarifications are needed on the scope and nature of various organizations, relationships/coordination between SOMO standards and: • NASA technical standards program (AE) • Enterprise data standards efforts • CCSDS • OMG • Astrophysics FITS committees, and similar
GSFC Reflections on the SOMO Standards Program GSFC DATA SYSTEMS STANDARDS NTAG 4-25-2001 • b. Need for increased SOMO management support for Standards activity. If there is to be a viable effort to support Voluntary Consensus Standards activities nationally and internationally, SOMO must: • -Help raise the stature of SOMO Standards program in NASA Management's purview. Treat it as a NASA non-flight project. • - Work with GSFC management to establish clear coordination between SOMO standards and SOMO technology. • -Encourage assignment of adequate resources to participate in standards developments and standards reviews. • -Support proposed travel budgets when agency budgets are being formulated. Travel money for non-Enterprise activities has always been extremely limited.
GSFC Reflections on the SOMO Standards Program GSFC DATA SYSTEMS STANDARDS NTAG 4-25-2001 • Provide adequate resources to develop and test “CCSDS standard resource implementations” at GSFC (e.g. SCPS, CFDP and SLE, etc.), so the adoption of these standards at GSFC can be facilitated without having to rely on possible funding from the SOMO Technology Program. • - Encourage participation from NASA centers. • c. Need for more consistent Standards Review procedures across Field Centers • - To achieve more comprehensive agency inputs and to facilitate reaching official agency position relative to a given standard.
