CMS HO Calorimeter • HO has been fabricated, installed and commissioned by Indian Groups (TIFR +PU) • Issues • Outer rings having inadequate S/B ratio for MIPS • HPDs in outer rings have phasing out. • Solution • Replace HPDs with read out device Si-PM • Achieve excellent resolution • Insensitive to ambient magnetic field • Compact • Not much electronics is needed

Current Activities • TB2011 (17-29 July, 2011 ; HO 18, 19 July) • HO Continuing for parasitic stability studies during HB data taking period (21-28 July) • Studying response of Si-PM for HO to the particle beams using e 20, 50, 80, 100, 150 GeV  20, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300 GeV  150, 225 GeV • Analysis of data • Currently going on – results to be compiled in CMS notes/publications and in the Ph.D. thesis.

  4. Upgrade of Outer Hadron Calorimeter • Fabrication of Si-PM control Boards -- Prototype • fabrication carried out successfully in India -CRL, Ooty • Production and Quality Control of 160 Boards to be done by Indian group

  5. Si-PM Boards • Fabrication & QC of 120 Boards (2196 Channels) to be • carried out Indian Group • Validation of SiPM for CMS environment • Testbeam studies, stability, radiation hardness, magnetic field immunity, saturation effects • Installation • Assembly of Read out boxes • QC • Burn-in Test at CERN to be carried out jointly • by CERN/India • Setting up test facility • LED Calibration Setup
