Ch. 9 Interpersonal Relationships Do you have… • Shared perception? • Ongoing interdependent connection? • Relational expectations? • Interpersonal intimacy? …then you probably have an interpersonal relationship going on!
What TYPES of interpersonal relationships do we have? • Choice and circumstance • Vary by POWER dynamics
Symmetrical patterns • Competitive—power struggle, both want to win • Submissive— Ask: “what do you want?” Answer: “I don’t know, whatever sounds good to you…” Symmetrical=same
What leads us to an IP ATTRACTION? Short-term attraction Long term attraction Intelligence, credibility Self-disclosure/ reciprocation of liking Similarity Differences/complementary needs • Proximity • Physical appearance (positive interaction=>boost physical attraction!) POV=predicted outcome value (p. 256)
Building a Relationship(Relationship escalation) • Preinteraction Awareness (early observation/invitations) • Acquaintance(introductions, casual banter) • Exploration (getting to know better) • Intensification (good friends, dating) • Intimacy (a ‘couple’ or BFFs) • “can tell each other anything” • Commitment or label • Lots of time, trust, self-disclosure • Bonded
Turning Points Moments of positive or negative change. Causal=event causes a change Reflective=event signals a change in relationship
Breaking up is hard to do…(relational de-escalation) • Turmoil/stagnation (things are ‘different” /going through motions) • De-intensification (distance/questioning) • Individualization (from ‘we’ to ‘me’/ ‘I’) • Separation (separate) • Post-separation effects (making sense, ‘grave dressing’)
WHY do we stay (or get out) of various relationships? We FILTER via Social Exchange Theory (i.e. cost/benefit analysis)
3. Openness vs. Closedness • Self disclose? Too much/too little?
Social Penetration Theory/Model Increased self—disclosure =increase intimacy
Self-disclosure… • Has several levels • Should be reciprocal • Is risky • Involves trust
In-Class Activity •Think of a time when you self-disclosed information to somebody that you later regretted or realized was inappropriate 1. Describe the situation, person or people involved and the information you disclosed 2. Tell which guideline(s) you violated 3. How would you “re-do” this interaction? (Be prepared to share with the class)
