  6. How do we navigate in this new world of education? • Students and families (and employers) care about who you are and what you do when you are not in the classroom. • Social media rules the land. • Email and text message allow for instant communication. • Computing and technology create a pathway into all corners of life.

  7. The Election Too Much Information

  8. Serious Worries Teacher Fired After Student Sexual Encounter Allegation Montgomery Bell Academy leaders fired an English teacher from their middle school this past week over allegations stemming from a sexual encounter with an MBA student and two other individuals. What is known at this time is that the MBA student is in the 11th grade and is not in a class with the now-former teacher. Still unknown is whether the sexual encounter was consensual. Nashville, TN January 21, 2012 REPUTATION

  10. Everything Else!

  11. Teacher Gone Bad Who does she think she is?

  12. Always look for red flags! What are some red flags with a student?

  13. What do you do? Maria is a 6th grade student. At 3am on Wednesday, she emails you about her homework. She then adds that her mother has been really on her back and she just finished all of her chores for the day. Thursday, she arrives to school late and sleeps through most of her classes. When you see her leave school, she hugs you goodbye, saying “I have a long night tonight, Mr. Gordon!”

  14. What do you do? You really enjoy working with Marcus. Very fragile and nervous, he seems to connect with your instruction more than any other teacher. Other colleagues have mentioned this to you and spoke highly of your efforts. When checking your facebook page, you notice that Marcus has sent you a friend request. You are worried that ignoring his request would shut him out, but you know that your facebook page is filled with your private life.

  15. What do you do? Janae was a very focused student, but recently, you notice that she isn’t completing her homework and failing tests and quizzes. You mention this to her and she shrugs you off. She is one of the brightest students who really has a good chance at getting into a good high school. This is why you are so worried. When you are walking to your car, you see Janae embracing someone at the bus stop. They look to be engaging in a great deal of heavy petting. Could this be the reason that she has lost focus?

  16. Easy Solutions • Tell the principal • Refer the student to the counselor. • If they want personal, give them personal! Share stories. Laugh. • Be yourself first.
