  2. I. Islam Terms • Islam- A monotheistic religion based on the teachings of Muhammad B. Muslim- A person who follows Islam C. Muhammad- The founder of Islam D. Mecca- The holiest city of Islam

The Split A.  When the Prophet Muhammad died he named no successor. 1.   Followers who believed the person with the strongest leadership skills should be in charge became known as Sunni Muslims. 2. Other felt that only decedents of Muhammad should be in charge, they became known as Shi’a or Shiite

  4. III. What happened next? A. The military forces of both camps engaged in a fight south of Baghdad B. Hussein a direct decedent of Muhammad was captured and brutally murdered by Sunni troops C. The death of Hussein became an important event for Shi’ites who still view themselves as being oppressed today
