Latinos Fight for Change • 1966: Dolores Huerta & Cesar Chavez form union called United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (UFW) • Fought for better working conditions for farm workers, mostly in CA • Used non-violent tactics such as grape boycott Brown Power Movement • Congress enacts bilingual program (language & culture) • Young Mexicans start Chicano Pride movement

  3. 1968: David Sanchez forms Brown Berets • Berets organized East LA student walkouts (of classes) demanding smaller classes & more Chicano teachers & administrators

Latinos Gain Political Power • Immigration policies since 60s create more diversity in America • League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC): files lawsuits to end segregation (precursor to Brown case) • Mexican American Political Association (MAPA): Helps get 8 Latinos elected to the House of Reps, 1 Senator • La Raza Unida: wants to create independent Latino political movement (candidates run for mayors/school boards
