Post-War Prosperity • After World War II America was living the dream! • Wars promote economic growth very rapidly. • Capitalism: an economic and political system where private owners regulate trade and industry NOT THE STATE! • Private owners snatched up any chance to make money
The threat of the Unknown • Truman Doctrine- VERY IMPORTANT! • President Harry S. Truman states that the U.S. would any assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces. • What force will we see come to threaten the way of Democracy?

Rebuild and Regulate • Marshall Plan: America would give Western Europe 12 Billion Dollars to help rebuild the economy and structures. • Bretton Woods Conference: 730 delegates from the 44 Allied nations met to discuss and regulate the monetary situation of the world.

The Domino Affect • If one falls they all fall. • The West: worried about Communism spreading Westward • The East: worried about Capitalism spreading Eastward. • Two sides to a coin.
Berlin Wall • Cut off East Berlin from West Berlin • Meant to separate the Western countries from the Communists in the East • Patrolled by guards with assault rifles and machine guns.
Berlin Airlift • Allied nations dropped food, water, and other supplies to people in East Berlin • Dropped almost 10,000 tons a day • Did the Soviets respond with force?
Hungarian Revolution Part 1 • The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 • nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian People's Republic • Soviet-imposed policies brought the people to their knees. • The Revolution lasted from October 23 until November 10, 1956
Hungarian Revolution Part 2 • Soviets say they are willing to discuss peace • Do they? • The Soviet forces move in and crush the revolution • Results: Over 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet troops were killed. • 200,000 Hungarians fled as refugees
Prague Spring • Revolt against Soviet rule in Czechoslovakia • Began in January 1968 and ended in August of 1968 • Soviets called in the Warsaw Pact to help. • The Pact sent 1,000,000 troops to occupy the country • No real conflict.
