Problem with databases • Lack of skills result in: • Barriers to entry • Use of available systems (Access, FMPro, Excel) • Ad hoc databases • Inappropriate design • Poor field definitions (d-m-s, text for #, uncontrolled categories) • Lack of normalisation, redundant data • Standalone desktop databases • Backup and sustainability • No reuse, no web accessibility
Solution • A tool which makes it as easy to create a web-accessible, server-based database as a standalone desktop database • A wizard which builds a clean, well-designed database and populates lookup tables where possible • A wizard which builds a set of web pages which can simply be edited for appearance
