Worksite Wellness DSHS State Agency Wellness Program
Background • HB 1297 – Implementation began in 2008 • State Agencies “MAY” • Model Wellness Program Development Team created a menu of priority objectives and evidence-based strategies to meet these objectives • Statewide Wellness Coordinator served as consultant to agencies who chose to develop a wellness program
State Agency Model Wellness Program Priority Objectives • Increase Usage of Preventive Services and Screenings • Improve Tobacco Cessation and Prevention • Increase Routine Physical Activity • Improve Healthy Eating Choices • Improve Stress Management • Improve Lactation Support for Nursing Mothers
Feedback • Surveyed state agencies every two years • What policies and programs were being implemented • What resources and support they needed from DSHS/Statewide Wellness Coordinator What the Agencies Said • Data • Funding • Policy Interpretation • Implementable Turn-Key Initiatives
AH-HA! • Disconnect between the time and expertise required to translate health promotion principles to implementable activities and the time and expertise available among state agency staff.
New Approach to Statewide Wellness • Large Statewide Initiatives implemented by DSHS and partner organizations which state agencies link into. • Get Fit Texas State Agency Physical Activity Challenge • Know Your Numbers/Health Risk Assessment Initiative • Onsite Flu Vaccination Clinics • State Agency Wellness Conference • Maintain No Gain – Holiday Weight Maintenance
Agency-Level Wellness Planning • Logistical implementation of major initiatives • Policy development • Environmental supports • Fitness Rooms • Classes • Nutrition/Healthy Eating • Massage Therapy • Zumba • Yoga
2013 Get Fit Texas State Agency Challenge • 170,129 = Total FTEs • 20,909 = Total GFT Participants • 12.29% = Percentage of Total FTEs Participating in GFT • 14, 521 = Total GFT Completions • 69.44% = Percentage of Participants that Completed • 8.53% = GFT Overall Completion Percentage (Of All FTEs) • 74 = Number of Agencies Participating (least 5 participants) • 13.1 Million = Total number of PA Minutes Logged (based on Completions)
Next Steps • Currently planning the Know Your Numbers/Health Risk Assessment Initiative • Develop communication system with private worksites and schools to mirror state agency wellness liaisons • Expand Get Fit Texas Physical Activity Challenge to private worksites and schools (as worksites initially) • Develop other initiatives in state agency setting and expand to private worksites and schools
