Worksite Wellness at CPCC • Tobacco Free Campus – Why go tobacco free? • 31 NC colleges and universities already tobacco-free • NC tobacco-free legislation effective January, 2010 • April 2009, Senate Bill 287/Session Law 2009-16 – part of the law contains a Comprehensive Wellness Initiative for members of the State Health Plan • SHP participants will have tobacco cessation and weight management requirements effective July, 2010, and July, 2011. • Benchmarks set for access to 80/20 and 70/30 health plans • It’s the right thing to do for the college community
Worksite Wellness at CPCC • Tobacco Free Campus Policy timeline: • March 2009 - Task Force convened • March 2009 – Survey • 2200 respondents • 21% use tobacco products • 23% reported health concerns from smoke use/exposure • 66% indicated support of 100% tobacco-free policy
Worksite Wellness at CPCC Tobacco Free Campus Policy timeline (continued): • June 2009 - Task Force made Cabinet recommendation that CPCC become 100% tobacco-free in June 2009. Cabinet approved this recommendation unanimously • September 2009 - Board of Trustees approves TFC policy Policy overview: • Effective January 2, 2010 - Students, employees, visitors, contractors, or other persons performing services on behalf of the College are not permitted to use any tobacco products at any time while on CPCC premises, including all grounds, building, facilities, vehicles, and parking lots. Repeated student violations will be handled through the student disciplinary process. Repeated employee violations will be referred to their supervisor and will be handled through the appropriate employee disciplinary process.
Worksite Wellness at CPCC • Tobacco Free Campus Policy • Next Steps • Communications and cessation support • Implementation team on each campus • Communications plan to be implemented by Marketing / Community Relations: • Communicator, CPCC Today, broadcast email, Twitter, Facebook, etc. • Website currently being developed • Signage (place-marker signage this fall; permanent signage installed Dec 2009) • Handbills to be printed for use in Jan 2010 at beginning of spring semester
Worksite Wellness at CPCC • Tobacco Free Campus Policy • Next Steps • Promotion opportunities at campus events – Student Registration Day, Fall Fest, Great American Smoke-Out, etc. • Cessation materials prepared for distribution by Be Well, Student Life, and Campus Implementation Teams • Multiple campus educational outreach events will be conducted on all 6 campuses this fall, including lunch and learn activities centered around the Great American Smoke-Out in November.
Worksite Wellness at CPCC • Tobacco Free Campus Policy • Next Steps • Tobacco-Free Campus Implementation Team (a team has been established for each of our 6 campuses) • Knowledge of policy, rationale, communications plan, and cessation resources • Support communications efforts, help develop campus signage plan • Support cessation/wellness initiatives, maintain inventory of materials • Support outreach/tabling opportunities at campus events
