What Is Lactose Intolerance? • Not being able to digest Lactose A sugar found in Milk and Milk products • Deficiency of the enzyme lactase Produced by cells lining the small intestines (Sibley, Fisher, & Pennington, 2009)
Symptoms - Abdominal Bloating - Flatulence • Diarrhea • Stomach Cramps Extreme cases • Nausea • Vomiting • May occur 15 minutes to 2 hours after • Not everyone suffers these symptoms • People with a low tolerability to lactose will suffer the symptoms (The Dairy Council, 2014) • 82% of patients reported that their lactose intolerance affects their daily activities. (Ritter Pharmaceuticals, 2014)
Guide to Symptoms (Fox, 2011)
Causes Hereditary - A genetically programmed decrease in Lactase activity as infants mature. - This decrease in lactase production tends to be stronger in non- dairy consuming societies, ( African and Asian populations). - Symptoms of lactose intolerance typically become present in children and young adults, but can also develop in older individuals. Less Common factors - Intestinal parasites, chemotherapy, penicillin reactions, surgery, pregnancy, or dairy avoidance. - Very rarely, children can be born with a genetic disorder that restricts the production of lactase. (Ritter Pharmaceuticals, 2014) ( Holistic Wellness Basics, 2012)
Preventions No Prevention! • Lactase Additives - a form of liquid to use with milk - heat the milk - add a few drops to a quart of milk - refrigerate for 24 hours - This technique reduces the lactose in milk by 90% • Lactase Tablets - Helps digest solid foods that contain lactose - 1-3 tablets before a meal or a snack • Lactose Reduced milk - Higher cost - Include all other nutrients found in milk (Health Central, 2014)
Likely Affected • Problems with digestive track • People with an infection • Become intolerant to lactose in Adulthood • Some ethnic groups are affected more than others • People on medication (Nemours, 2014) (Gitalis, 2012)
