What is it… Lactose Intolerance is when you cannot digest a sugar found in milk products, called lactose. Most people begin to notice it as they get older. Since only 1 in 60,000 babies are actually born with lactose intolerance.
What causes it? Lactose intolerance occurs when the cells lining the small intestine are unable to produce the enzyme lactase. The enzymes break down lactose into glucose which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream. Although it is rare, you can also become lactose intolerant from an injury to the small intestine caused by health issues such as celiac disease, Crohn's disease, or chemotherapy.
Who does lactose intolerance affect? Everyone has a chance of becoming lactose intolerant but you are more likely to obtain it if it is present in your genes. Some ethnic groups are at a greater risk than others. Nearly 100% of people in Asia, South-Africa and Latin-America are affected. Northern Europe is affected much less at a rate of only 2-5%. And it is estimated that 30 to 50 million North Americans are lactose intolerant.
Dealing with Milk Products People who are lactose intolerant can still withstand some milk or dairy products but may have to cut down on the amount in their diet. People with severe reactions to lactose may need to completely cut milk products out of their diets and find a replacement source for the calcium they will be lacking.
Symptoms • Abdominal pain • Gas • Diarrhea • Nausea • Abdominal bloating
